Shimmer was inspired by an old black and white picture featuring my mom posing on a rock in the ocean, taken when she was just 16 in 1953. This was back in the days when we had actual hard copies of pics and the family albums came out on special occasions, and so the image stuck in my memory from an early age. I'm sure sitting on the rock was uncomfortable but she still tried to strike an elegant pose!
The title Shimmer came about as the work progressed. As I worked on the curves of the form it began to take on the appearance of a distorted reflection, as seen reflected from the surface of rippling water or through a heat haze, hence Shimmer.
I gravitate to the mid century design period in general. Simpler times, and a tangible quality of materials perhaps. I think I unconsciously incorporate the period ethos of elegant simplicity, which I believe translates into timeless design, in the same way a mathematical equation is elegant. If it works then it works for all time.
Shimmer can also be scaled up and I’m really looking forward to seeing it in mirror polished stainless steel next to a body of water!
