Shimmer was inspired by an old black and white picture featuring my mom posing on a rock in the ocean, taken when she was just 16 in 1953. This was back in the days when we had actual hard copies of pics and the family albums came out on special occasions, and so the image stuck in my memory from an early age. I'm sure sitting on the rock was uncomfortable but she still tried to strike an elegant pose!
The title Shimmer came about as the work progressed. As I worked on the curves of the form it began to take on the appearance of a distorted reflection, as seen reflected from the surface of rippling water or through a heat haze, hence Shimmer.
I gravitate to the mid century design period in general. Simpler times, and a tangible quality of materials perhaps. I think I unconsciously incorporate the period ethos of elegant simplicity, which I believe translates into timeless design, in the same way a mathematical equation is elegant. If it works then it works for all time.
Shimmer can also be scaled up and I’m really looking forward to seeing it in mirror polished stainless steel next to a body of water!

"Much of my sculpture examines the dialogue between two merged concepts—whether it is a reclining figure dissolving into a landscape (Shimmer), the sweeping lines of a motorcycle reflecting a country road (Sora), or two rings merging into a protective aura (Aura).
With Solstice, that dialogue explores the intersection of ancient ritual and contemporary abstraction. Inspired by the dynamic movement of festival dancers celebrating seasonal turns—evoking medieval gatherings under twilight—the sculpture captures a figure in full, exuberant motion. The dramatic flared contours and sweeping balance channel both the spirit of communal celebration and the primal rhythm of the sun’s turning."

Finish & Patina: Cast bronze featuring a custom black/blue marbled patina with hand-burnished bronze highlights along the leading edges.
Authentication: Hand-engraved with the artist’s signature, creation date, edition number, and foundry mark (Artcast Inc., Canada).

Zephyr was inspired by the forms of wind swept trees clinging to rocky outcrops in Japanese paintings. “The Japanese art of rock balancing, and balance of the form as a whole, is a major part of the aesthetic involved in creating my sculptures”.
