What is engineered stone?
All the sculptures are handmade in Canada by the artist using Canadian stone.
Over many years I have developed an engineered stone composite material to enable my creative concepts and produce high quality, unique and accessible work. This material is a combination of crushed marble or black granite (Canadian ‘absolute black’ granite) mixed with a resin. It is non toxic, odorless and in fact is much the same material used to make modern counter tops. It is as true to the original uncrushed stone as is possible.
I use this composite material to either cast the sculptures in limited editions or create much larger completely original pieces formed around a fiberglass and steel armature. All the works are my own unique designs. The casting process is followed by grinding and polishing to reveal the material's beauty. This process produces sculptures that have exactly the same appearance and tactile qualities of solid stone, and although still very heavy, they are much lighter than 100% natural stone, a big plus when it comes to shipping and installation. The composite material is also repairable, should there be accidental damage to the sculpture. Kept indoors engineered stone sculptures will only require dusting. Outdoor sculptures should be washed with cool water only, this can be complemented with wax polish to maximize the shine.
How many editions are made?
Editions are limited to a maximum of fifty. Editions are cast in a mold but significant changes can still be made. Each one is therefore unique to some degree. Larger sculptures are part of a series, which means they are 'free form' sculptures based on a design concept, no molds involved. Since they are free formed I can vary the design to a greater degree and the design does ‘evolve’ with each iteration.
Does the price include a base or pedestal?
Small sculptures, up to four feet, that require support come with a fixed base made as small as possible.
We also provide plinths up to 42" in height that can be used without the smaller base. These can be ordered in black granite or white marble engineered stone, with a foot print of 14" x 14" or 12" x 12". Price for either footprint size or height is $1500.
If you need a size outside of that range we can provide a quotation.
Large scale sculpture information
Large scale works are created using an engineered stone over a steel and glass fiber armature. This combination and layering of composites with real stone enables the creation of larger structures and delicate forms which would simply be unfeasible to carve from solid stone. All are suitable for outdoor display.
The large scale works are around a third of the weight of solid stone which makes shipping and installation much easier.
Heavy plate steel bases are used to support the large scale sculptures. These are a low profile means of support ideal for indoor display or on an existing paved or compacted area outdoors, and can be bolted down for added security in public places. Sculptures are supported by a central round pin so they can be turned quite easily to achieve a new viewing aspect. If a concrete pad is being made the steel base is not required provided a 1.5” Dia. tube is set into the concrete. Please ask for more details.
Custom made bases/plinths to add height can be made to client specifications.
Signed?
Each piece is signed in an inconspicuous place.
Care of engineered stone sculptures
If displayed outdoors, engineered stone will eventually weather. A regular coat of black wax will help keep the sculpture looking good.
I recommend Bellinzoni Polishing paste Wax or TeWax black wax made by Tenax.
If the color has faded, I would also use UniBlack1 by Tenax first. This is an ink like pigment that will penetrate the surface and should be used carefully. Cover up everything around the sculpture before using this product and wear gloves for both treatments.
Apply the wax in cool conditions only otherwise it will be almost impossible to buff to a shine. Apply in the spring and autumn for best protection and results. Apply two coats of wax at each time and buff between coats.
If the sculpture has accumulated bird droppings or dust the wax should be applied after washing the sculpture with warm water (no detergents and no scrubbing or jet washing). It will probably be unnecessary to treat the underside parts of the sculpture.
For the buffing work I recommend a polishing machine with a 7” polishing bonnet (Makita 7”) to make the task easier. Use a light action with a slow speed and keep the mop moving to avoid creating too much friction. The bonnets will become clogged sooner if the wax is soft.
These products are all well known stone care products that can even be found on Amazon at times or GranQuartz Canada.
